I think it is fair to recognise that it may not be hypocrisy that causes someone to struggle with understanding and applying the Bible. They may interpret the Bible differently to how you do (e.g. I’m sure I understand it differently to you, for example), they may have experienced disappointment in applying things they thought were true (e.g. they may have prayed earnestly for something that didn’t happen), etc.
