Simon Adahl

Simon Adahl

Yesterday I was having dinner with rock musician and revivalist Simon Adahl. He and his close friend Orjan Armgren are two down-to-earth, humble people that experience countless miracles. I literally mean countless. I have attended four of their meetings where they share testimonies non-stop for a couple of hours. Still, Simon had so much to tell that he invited me to his house so that he could share even more.

Here are a few examples of what they have experienced:

– Once, Simon passed by a man he’d never met and suddenly said “The answer is Estonia”. The man was stunned. He explained that minutes earlier, he had prayed to the Lord “Where should my aid relief go, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania?”

– Another time he called a man and shouted prophetically in the phone “Yes, you are My evangelist!!” Right then, the man had aimed a knife at his artery to kill himself. Now, he ended those plans and returned to God.

– A non-Christian lady came over to Simon and shared some troubles she had. Simon then suddenly said that he saw her as a young girl, running on a grass field with a kite, filled with joy. Orjan, who also was there, said “I hear the song ‘This Little Light of Mine'”. The woman immediately went down on her knees shouting “I want to be saved!” It turned out that they had pointed out her favourite activity and favourite song during the happiest time in her life.

I could go on and on, and I probably will in future blog posts. Every time Simon and Orjan share these stories they emphasize that they have nothing in themselves, they have only received free gifts by the grace of God – gifts that every believer have and can use. They don’t want to build a ministry, they want to equip all believers to do the works of the Kingdom. At every meeting they conduct, Simon orders the audience to point at him and say “He has nothing more than us! We are all equal for the Lord!”

Not only is Simon a “no hype” charismatic, he is also a peacemaker. I knew already that he and his brother Frank had written a beautiful song about the reunion of Korea, where the Spirit of God would create peace, brotherhood and forgiveness. When I talked with him yesterday, he told me that he had been a conscientious objector when he was called to do military service. “There were debates in my church about this”, he said. “Some talked about defending the home land and so on, but I belonged to the “thou shalt not kill”-team.”

As Simon grew older he became a succesful musician in the band Edin-Adahl. They were one of the most popular Christian bands in Sweden and actually contested for Sweden’s part in the Eurovision song contest 1990. But during these years Simon didn’t walk in the power of the Spirit. In the middle of the 90’s he had a crisis, got mad at God and decided to leave church. He found a wife, Maria, that knew almost nothing about Christianity (she thought that Jesus and Moses were cousins!).

At the beginning of the new millenia, Simon and his family became stalked. A man sent threat mails, destroyed their car, stood outside their children’s kindergarten staring etc. They were terrified and constantly worried, but didn’t manage to get enough evidence to bring this man to court. After a while they went to vacation in Tenerife to get rid of the stress for a while.

One night, Simon’s wife Maria screamed “There’s a man in the room!!” Simon immediately jumped out of the bed ready to fight, but there was no one there. He got mad at Maria for scaring him like that, but she said “What is an apostle?” “Christian guys 2000 years ago, why do you ask?” “The man stood right here a minute ago and said that he was called the apostle Matthew, and he wanted you to read his book.”

Simon and Maria

Simon picked up his Bible again. He expected a new revelation that would make him rich and famous. Instead he got chocked when he read “Love your enemies” in Matthew 5:44. “How could I love the idiot that is stalking us?” he shouted to God. But still he started to bless his enemy one minute a day. At first it was just empty words.  After a while though, he actually started to have compassion with this man. After five months, he sincerely blessed him and prayed for his protection and happiness.

Then Simon found him on the street. The man got scared, but Simon hugged him and invited him to dinner. The man cried and accepted his request. Then Simon went home to his wife, wondering how he could explain this.

“Hey, remember the Matthew guy in Tenerife?” “Oh yeah, he was horrible!” “Well, I found his book. It’s in the Bible. It said ‘love your enemies’.” “Okay…” “So I started to bless our stalker.” “You did what?!” “Don’t worry, the blessing worked. I met him today, he regrets everything so now I… well… invited him for dinner.”

Maria was stunned. Then she said “I also want to be a Christian.”

From this point, God started to speak to Simon. His first word was to a lady to which he said “God is going to fix your problem and you are going to move.” What am I saying, he thought for himself. “Well, it takes a miracle for that to happen”, she said. Three days later she contacted him and said that the problems were fixed and now she was going to move to the small town of Hjo (where she later found her husband).

See what happens when you love your enemies? Simon could not stop emphasizing the importance of forgiveness when accessing the gifts of the Spirit. We need love and compassion for miracles to abound. And it doesn’t hurt to be a conscientious objector as well.

By the way, out of curiosity are you and Joel connected to the Vineyard movement in Norway? I has having a hard time telling as you quote/reference John Wimber a lot…but your church’s website, Mosaik, it doesn’t state that it is Vineyard even though it says that it was influenced by the Vineyard… Don’t get me wrong, I love your thoughts and ideas posted here and will continue to read them – it is just its always cool to run into another Vineyard blogger, especially one who is thinking through Kingdom Theology from another cultural worldview. =)

        • Hi again!

Our church was planted as a Vineyard when the national directors, Hans and Lotta Sundberg, along with some others moved to Uppsala. Tragically, a conflict arose in the national board, with the result that Uppsala Vineyard left the movement, becoming Mosaik. It was a painful process from which we still have not healed from. Yet, we still agree with Vineyard values fully and Wimber continues to be one of our great inspirations. So feel free to count us in as Vineyard bloggers. 🙂

          Blessings!

wow! I’m sorry to hear about the division…may the Prince of Peace bring healing and forgiveness to all parties…

I’m looking forward to many more conversations about Jesus and the Kingdom of God. Blessings! 😀
